Barcelona Beaches

The Barcelona beaches were an industrial zone before the 1992 Olympic Games. They were characterized by dirty, smokey factories and trains and were in constant decay and largely ignored by the people of Barcelona.

They were then cleaned up and reclaimed by Barcelona for its citizens and are now one of the legacies of the 1992 Olympic Games that can be enjoyed by all.

So if you need to cool down and escape the heat of the city, head towards the beaches, an estimated 7 million people pack Barcelona's beaches every year.

There are also a wide variety of water sports on offer, from kite surfing to dinghy sailing. Boats can even be hired from the Escola Muncipal de Vela for those with more sailing experience.

Barcelona has 6 Beaches, 'Platges'.

  • Platja de Sant Sebastiá
  • Platja de la Barceloneta
  • Platja de La Nova Icaria
  • Platja de Bogatell
  • Platja de la Mar Bella
  • Platja de la Nova Mar Bella

In total there are about 4km of blue flag beaches and a walk along them will take you about 3 hours. In summer the best time of day to do this walk is in the morning or late afternoon as it can get very hot during the day. A walk along the beach is also a great thing to do in the winter months.

The wide boulevard is usually filled with people walking, cycling or skating.

The closest beach to the old city is the Platja de Sant Sebastiá and the Platja de La Nova Icaria is the busiest beach in Barcelona.

They all have showers, bars, Red Cross stations and emergency points, deck chairs, beach volley ball courts, and life guards. All these conveniences mean that there are crowds, so finding your perfect spot in the sun can be quite a challenge at times.

There are chiringuitos “Snack Bars” that stay open late. They are great places for a few sun-downers after a hard day on the beach. You could even go clubbing near the beaches at night, some of the hottest clubs like Club Catwalk and Opium Mar are located right on the beach.
